My project examines the establishment of Classics departments in universities in British North America (the Dominion of Canada after 1867) and the Ionian Islands (a British protectorate from 1815–1864; united with Greece thereafter) in the early- and mid-nineteenth century. Specifically, I focus on how, in founding new universities, British authorities included the Classics (Ancient Greece and Rome) as part of post-secondary curricula to establish educational institutions that perpetuated British dominance.
