Review your submission responses below: Researcher First Name: Kimberly Researcher Last Name: McKinley Department: Nursing Other Department: Project Title: Supporting Nursing Students with Executive Function Challenges in Clinical Instruction 1 Start semester: 1/19/2023 End Semester: 4/30/2024 Introduction - Please introduce yourself and include pertinent background information as it relates to your project's research area. I am faculty within the Faculty of Nursing and am currently the Assistant Chair Students. I work closely with student to support their learning needs as they move through the program. Please discuss your educational background and your work experience as it relates to this project. If possible, include a quote that helps define your interest in the project. I have worked in various areas of healthcare, including in management, where I have seen the challenges that nurses face in the clinical environment, especially as it related to learning and support provided in new environments. My interest in the project stems from seeing student who struggle to apply their knowledge in a clinical setting when they have shown they understand the concept in a classroom environment. I wanted to see if there were better strategies to support students with more diverse learning needs and if we could develop a program to inform both faculty and students on supports and strategies available Please summarize your project in plain language that others not in your field could understand. We were looking to see how we could better support student with diverse learning needs during their clinical practice in hospital and community settings. As a nurse, the expectation in clinical look different than those in a classroom; some neurodiverse students struggle to 'show' their knowledge in a clinical environment. We wanted to find strategies that instructors could use to encourage and contribute to student success. Identify the project goals and objectives. Explain how the results may be used to solve a problem or inform further research in the field. The goal was to create a toolkit of strategies that can be shown to faculty and students that can be implemented when students self-identify as neurodivergent or demonstrate that they are struggling to meet learning outcomes in a clinical environment with 'traditional' teaching methods. Briefly explain the steps taken (methods used) to conduct the research, and describe the key findings. I have presented at Western Canada Collaborative of Health Sciences Educators (WCCHSE) in May 2024. I have also presented to at a nursing faculty workshop in Oct 2024. I have two more tentatively scheduled presentations: TCDC workshop for all of Langara in March 2025 and I have applied to present at the NANDA International Conference which takes place in June 2025. Who was involved in this project (eg. faculty, students, community partners)? How did their involvement contribute to the project’s success? Were there any challenges to overcome? There were two students involved in the literature search and summarizing of key research. They took the lead in the initial search and 2 screening process. They also provided a summary document outlining the strategies discussed which was valuable in creating initial drafts of presentations. We struggled with library support for the search and review process. In other institutions I have worked in, the librarians will work with faculty to develop and execute search strategies, and then provide those results to the researchers to review. This support with the time consuming process of developing search strategies is integral when research time is not supported (ie: researchers are still teaching a full load and required to do research as 'extra'). We were not able to complete a full scoping review without additional library support. Please share any personal stories that made this research experience memorable/valuable. What are the next steps for this project and for you as a researcher? We completed a quick literature review to scope the available research and compare studied strategies. We were not able to complete a full scoping review as we did not have the required library support. Key finding included the following strategies that can support students to have improved learning outcomes. 1-2-3 Priority Setting Time management tools (time sequence plan) Providing Safe Spaces Cognitive Offloading Coaching, Debriefing & Feedback Prevent-TeachReinforce (PTR) Please upload any images that will help to showcase your project.
