Thank you for submitting ARC Final Report Our team may reach out to you with follow-up requests for clarification regarding your submission. Review your submission responses below: Researcher First Name: Denise Researcher Last Name: Thomas Department: Nursing Other Department: Project Title: Undergraduate student nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and practices of Hepatitis C: 1 Start semester: 9/2/2024 End Semester: 12/2/2024 Introduction - Please introduce yourself and include pertinent background information as it relates to your project's research area. My name is Denise Thomas, MHS, BSN, RN, CCNE, Nurse Educator with the Faculty of Nursing. I teach in Term 9 with Langara College preceptorship students. Nursing students have important frontline roles in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of hepatitis C. This study investigated knowledge and attitudes toward hepatitis C among preceptorship students in 2017 and 2018. Please discuss your educational background and your work experience as it relates to this project. If possible, include a quote that helps define your interest in the project. My previous nursing experiences involved caring for patients living with and at risk of HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV). A lot has happened since then. “Health Canada has approved several drug combinations to treat and cure hepatitis C, preventing progression of liver disease caused by HCV. For someone with hepatitis C for more than 6 months (chronic hepatitis C), their health care provider may prescribe a combination of medications.” Unfortunately, a lot of people are unaware of the prevention and cure of HCV that are available, including student nurses. I am highly motivated to support student nurses to teach their clients about prevention and cure of HCV. Please summarize your project in plain language that others not in your field could understand. We developed a timeline and project goals, analyzed the results of three student nursing cohorts from 2018-2018 of selfadministered HCV structured questionnaires upon completion of using descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. We discussed the factors associated with the results. Software: We used descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression and conducted using SPSS set at 95% CI. Identify the project goals and objectives. Explain how the results may be used to solve a problem or inform further research in the field. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge, attitude and practices of preceptorship students to learn what factors are associated with knowledge, practices and attitudes of HCV. Student nurses have a key role in the frontline to better equip patients with knowledge of prevention and access to cure of HCV. Briefly explain the steps taken (methods used) to conduct the research, and describe the key findings. My next steps are to prepare the manuscript for publication and work on knowledge dissemination: "Undergraduate student nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and practices of Hepatitis C (HCV)." 2 Who was involved in this project (eg. faculty, students, community partners)? How did their involvement contribute to the project’s success? Were there any challenges to overcome? Researcher: Denise Thomas, Student Research Assistant: Alice Nguyen, Consultant/support from ARC: Data analyst, Andres. The major challenge was related to "reversing the scale" in SPSS and providing the SRA technical support for data analysis. The methods used were then double checked by Andres and the student research assistant completed the second analysis. Please share any personal stories that made this research experience memorable/valuable. My most memorable moment was working with a student research assistant, I was very impressed with how they were able to rapidly develop professional communication skills rapidly. Working on a project takes a team approach to succeed and to see the SRA thrive and reach their own professional goals is invaluable. For example, when I provided feedback to the student in PebblePad, they implemented it immediately. They also shared a few experiences, including: "For the HCV project, I focused on data analysis and collaborated with Andres for a second review, which taught me the value of teamwork and attention to detail." When the student was uncertain, she became very resourceful, for example, "I also searched for journals to publish our work, gaining insight into how to navigate the publication process. These experiences have strengthened my communication, writing, and research skills, bringing me closer to my goals." What are the next steps for this project and for you as a researcher? 1 student research assistant completed modules on how to use SPSS. They entered the data into SPSS and set at 95% CI. After completing the first analysis the research assistant needed support on how to make the entries into SPSS and utilize a scale that was meaningful. We sought out the support of a data analyst with the Applied Research Centre, Andres, who provided technical support and insights to the student research assistant.
